If you’ve ever tried to get a taxi in St Barth during Christmas week, you already know the reality. The official rates exist. But what you actually pay depends on the time of year, the driver, the vehicle, and how badly you need that ride.
A system without meters
St Barth taxis don’t use meters. Prices are fixed by route, but “fixed” is a loose term here. The official rate card published by the Collectivité gives a baseline. In practice, every driver sets their own price within a range, and that range shifts significantly depending on the season, the demand on any given day, and the type of vehicle they’re driving.
A driver with a standard sedan charges differently than one running a luxury SUV or a van. A ride booked three days in advance costs less than one arranged at 8:30pm when the ferry just docked and everyone needs a car at the same time.
The rates below are realistic averages for high season. Expect the higher end during Christmas and New Year week, Bucket Regatta in March, and any night when a major event is happening on the island.
Typical high season rates (1 to 4 passengers by car, 1 to 6 by van, one way)
Airport to Gustavia: €20 to €50
Airport to Saint-Jean: €15 to €35
Airport to Gouverneur Beach: €50 to €80
Airport to Grand Cul de Sac: €50 to €100
Gustavia to Saint-Jean Beach: €40 to €70
Gustavia to Saline Beach: €50 to €80
Gustavia to Flamands Beach: €50 to €90
Private island tour (2 to 3 hours): €250 to €400
These are baselines. When demand is high and availability is low, the numbers go up.
Why prices go up during peak season
St Barth has a small, fixed number of licensed drivers. The island does not scale up its taxi fleet when December arrives. The same drivers covering a quiet October are the ones covering New Year’s Eve. When demand spikes and supply stays flat, prices rise. That is simply how the island works.
During the busiest weeks, the best drivers are often pre-booked on private standby for a single client or villa group — a dedicated arrangement that runs €200 or more per hour and locks that driver out of the regular market entirely. Which means there are even fewer taxis available for everyone else.
If you are visiting during high season without a pre-arranged transport plan, you will feel this. Last-minute rides become genuinely hard to find, especially for early morning airport departures or late-night pickups after dinner.
What actually affects the price
The vehicle matters. A driver running a newer SUV or premium van charges more than one with a standard sedan. You are not always comparing the same thing when you compare prices between drivers.
The time of day matters. Rides after 9pm or before 7am often carry a surcharge, especially during high season.
Group size matters. Standard taxis cover up to 4 passengers. For groups of 5 or 6, you will need a van — which means a higher base price, but the rate is still per vehicle, not per person. For larger groups it actually works in your favor to fill the van.
Payment method matters too. Many drivers still prefer cash in euros or US dollars. Some accept cards but it is not universal and some add a small surcharge for card payments. Always confirm before the ride.
How to avoid surprises
Confirm the price before you get in, not when you arrive. This is not rude — it is standard practice on the island and every driver expects it. Ask specifically about waiting charges if you need the driver to come back or stay nearby. For airport and ferry transfers, book at least 24 to 48 hours in advance during high season. Same-day bookings often do not work.
When a rental car makes more sense
If you are staying more than three or four days and plan to explore the island, do the math. Multiple taxi rides per day during high season adds up fast. A rental car gives you total freedom, no waiting, and no per-ride cost. The visitors who rely entirely on taxis in St Barth either have someone else paying, or they figure out midway through the week that they should have rented a car.
GO SBH handles this so you don’t have to
GO SBH connects visitors with vetted, reliable drivers who are clear about pricing upfront. No surprises at the end of the ride. Transfers from the airport, the ferry terminal, or between any two points on the island — coordinated before you arrive so the car is there when you need it.
